Inside the Fluorspar Mill of the Guggenheim Mining Company In Marion, Kentucky
This is an old photograph that was taken inside the mill of the fluorspar mill of the Guggenheim Mining Company in the town of Marion in Crittenden County, Kentucky. The man in the photograph was shoveling fluorspar into the crusher used to process the mineral after it was taken from the mine. Fluorspar is used as a fluxing agent in the production of steel. For a while, Crittenden County, Kentucky was the world's leading producer of this important mineral.
The Guggenheim Mining Company was a gigantic mining operation throughout the United States that was owned by Daniel Guggenheim. He was noted for paying poor wages to his employees and disregarding their well being.
Crittenden County is no longer a leading producer of fluorspar. Today, the steel industry gets the majority of the mineral from Mexico and other foreign nations because it is too costly to mine in the United States (i.e., American miners have to be paid much more than foreign miners who work for a tiny fraction of the pay Americans would receive).
McNabb Mines: Company Store
The company store or commissary was constructed circa 1882 of cut, mortared, and coursed sandstone. The building's present dimensions are 24' wide by 84' long, but a series of road widening projects has significantly disturbed the southern end of this feature. There is a door opening on the northern wall but no window openings on the eastern or western elevations. Also, there is no roof. On the interior there is a sandstone box, possibly a foundation, with an opening in the center. This box is located along the west wall. In addition, there is a sandstone foundation that divides the interior space in half and is constructed of the same cut, mortared, and coursed sandstone used throughout the site. A 6" interior lip is also evident in this building and would have been used as a floor joist support.
